Did you know that we inspect the feet of our chickens? Under the supervision of the Food Safety Authority’s inspection veterinarians, the veterinary assistants assess the feet of 100 birds from each flock. Why is this so important? Well, because based on the feet of the chickens, we can assess their foot health and their overall health. The feet also indicate whether we need to adjust anything in the barn environment.
Since we started raising the more slowly growing Rowan Ranger chicken, we have seen a significant improvement in the hoof health of our Bjäre chickens. On a scale where the maximum score is 200, we very often have a value of 0. Overall, we have seen a major improvement in the well-being of the birds since switching to the birds, and that is very gratifying as the focus of our concept and breeding work is on maintaining good health in our animals.
– It’s like we’ve gone 20-30 years back in time. Our new, slowly growing chicken makes it very fun to breed birds, says Bjärefågels CEO Per-Olof Ingemarsson.
The work to improve animal health continues. We are constantly looking for new methods and opportunities to further increase the quality of our stables and also to improve the taste and results of our final product!
