About our chicken feed
Maize, legumes, cereals, grass, soya, vitamins, minerals and amino acids are what Bjäre chickens eat. The feed is entirely vegetable-based and completely without additives, and we can guarantee that it contains neither fishmeal, meat meal, antibiotic-like preparations, nor genetically modified products.
Initially, we used French maize as feed for our chickens, as it wasn't genetically modified like the American variety back then. However, ideally, we wanted to use crops grown here at home. ”There are no Swedish maize farmers who grow maize for threshing,” the feed industry told us. So we had to struggle to find Swedish maize that met our high standards, but in the end, we succeeded.
Most of our feed is grown in southern Sweden. The grain is grown on Bjäre. When a large portion of the feed is grown locally and the manure returns to local cultivation, we work in a way that keeps the cycle close and resource-efficient. At least 70 percent of the feed is Swedish.
Why there is soy in the feed
Soya is the most climate-impacting ingredient in our feed, due to it being imported. Our future goal is to reduce and eventually eliminate soya from the feed. Before we can change feed, we must ensure that the protein content in a soya-free feed is sufficiently high so that our chickens are well. All soya that we at Bjärefågel and our farmers use is certified according to ProTerra or RTRS via the feed companies Lantmännen and Svenska Foder as importers of soya. The soya is GMO-free and is transported separately from other soya.
Reasons why we want to use Swedish crops
We strive for crop production with high food safety, clear requirements for responsible resource use, and fair working conditions. This is based on healthy crops, well-thought-out crop rotation, and efficient use of inputs. Important elements include preventative measures against pests, optimised use of fertiliser, and responsible withdrawal of irrigation water. Therefore, we opt for locally grown and Swedish produce whenever possible. This also makes it easier for us to follow the entire chain from cultivation to feed.
