Plenty of space
We raise many of our Bjäre chickens ourselves, but we also use breeders who work in exactly the same way we do. To become a breeder of Bjäre chickens, it's not enough to just keep the chickens in small flocks, nor is it enough to give them plenty of space and free access to feed and water. Furthermore, we want the breeders to be as close as possible, as shorter transport is an important part of how we want to work. Most of our breeding stables are located on Bjäre or in southern Halland.
When you place such demands on breeders, you limit yourselves quite considerably, but that doesn't bother us at all. Because we are happy with the size we are today and don't want to get much bigger.
We don't want any large chicken factories. We want to continue delivering exactly what we do today, in our opinion a really good chicken.
Why is plenty of space needed for chicken farming?
When we started to raise chickens, we were told that the chickens didn't need space to run free at all. ”Chickens live where you put them down, they don't need a lot of space,” said the experts. Then we painted a blue spot on the back of a chicken so we could recognise it. Then we let it out into the stable to see what it did... It certainly didn't stand still! No, chickens dart about and want plenty of space!
This is why our chickens have a great deal of space to move around in the poultry houses. The standard in Europe is approximately 42 kg of chicken per square metre. In Sweden, members of Svensk Fågel are permitted to have 36 kg of poultry per square metre. With us, the stocking density is lower than that, as we want to give the chickens space to move around.
We have almost halved the number of chickens!
This means that Bjäre chicken have twice as much space to move around in compared to a standard Swedish chicken. Thanks to our low stocking density, approximately 20 kg of poultry per square metre, we do not need to give our birds the antibiotic-like additive coccidiostats. Bjäre chickens are kept healthy through their good stable environment and diligent care. Antibiotics are only administered in cases of illness, upon prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Malin Sivertsson of Olastorp
In the middle of the ”pärelandet” [a local term for the area, literally 'potato country'] on Bjäre, Olastorp is located, and here live Malin and Daniel with their four children. The farm not only has chickens, but also grows lots of potatoes. A good portion of these become crisps sold in their own farm shop. It was Malin's father-in-law who started with chicken farming, but Malin liked Bjärefågels' concept and thought it could be a good complement to the cultivation. Today, they have their own chicken sheds at Olastorp, and the whole family is involved in supervision and care.
Kristoffer Turesson of Bölse Farm
Kristoffer is a young man with farming in his blood. It was his grandfather who once founded the farm, and Kristoffer manages it well. The farm has been raising chickens for over twenty years and, in addition to the chickens, they also have a machinery station and an contracting business.
