At Bjärefågel in Torekow AB, they breed chickens with a focus on sustainability and the vision that chicken that is well cared for tastes good. Now the company is taking a groundbreaking step towards increased sustainability and a better climate. As the first chicken producer to ever obtain a climate certificate, they are certifying their breeding and product, Bjärekyckling.
The climate certification means, among other things, that the company uses feed ingredients with a lower climate impact. The total energy consumption is reduced, renewable energy sources have been introduced in the breeding process, and soon all electricity will be 100 percent green. In addition, the use of fossil energy has also been minimized, and drivers have been trained in economical driving techniques.
– Bjärefågel has always been focused on working in a sustainable way, both in terms of animals, nature and the environment. By becoming climate certified, we raise the bar for ourselves and deliver a Bjärefågel that is even more sustainable and climate-friendly, says Robin Lundgren, CEO of Bjärefågel.
Reduces the climate impact
The climate certification is a voluntary optional certification to the IP standard's Sigill level and the Svenskt Sigill label, which Bjärefågel has held since 2008.
“When the consumer buys a food product that carries the Svenskt Sigill Klimatcertifierad label, they can feel confident that the breeder and farmer have done everything possible to reduce the climate impact of production without compromising the well-being of the animals,” says Britt Rahm, CEO of Sigill Kvalitetssystem AB.
Taking responsibility
The Bjärefågels climate certification means a reduction in the climate impact of up to 20-25 percent.
– One of the major environmental issues of our time is precisely the need to reduce emissions and make more efficient use of energy, something for which we all have a shared responsibility. It feels very good that we are now climate certified, says Per-Olof Ingemarsson, founder and one of the owners of Bjärefågel.
– It feels very exciting that Bjärefågel is the first to take this responsible step in chicken farming. We hope that this will open up and pave the way for more companies to choose to take the step and become climate certified, says Britt Rahm.

Facts about the Bee-eater: Bjärefågel in Torekow AB is located just outside Torekov on the Bjäre Peninsula. The company was founded in 1986 and has existed in its current form since 2000. The product is called Bjäre Chicken and is sold in well-stocked grocery stores throughout Sweden. From the very beginning, the focus has been on creating a non-additive chicken that is raised in a sustainable way. This means that the animals from start to finish receive a completely vegetable-based GMO-free feed that is mostly locally grown, that the chickens are allowed to grow slowly and have plenty of space to move around, and that no salt or water is added to unprocessed products after slaughter, among other things. Bjärefågel is a member of Svensk Fågel and Svenskt Sigill and follows their control and care programs.
Facts about Svenskt Sigill: Swedish Sigill is the only certification for food and flowers that guarantees Swedish origin of raw materials from first-class growers and animal breeders. To use the control and origin certification Swedish Sigill, food or flowers must come from animal husbandry or cultivation that is certified according to IP Sigill. This level in the standard ensures additional production value that goes beyond current legislation in the areas of deep-rooted care, environmental responsibility and food safety. The certification provides companies with powerful arguments when selling their products, and adds additional value to the customer.
Optional – Climate certification: This means that the company's operations meet the IP Seal level standard, and has also taken measures to reduce its climate impact. Food and flowers that come from cultivation and animal breeding that are certified under the optional option are allowed to bear the label "Swedish Seal Climate Certified".
