Bjärefågel takes another step towards increased animal welfare through a switch to Ranger Gold

Bjärefågel works to always stay at the forefront of chicken breeding. Now they are taking another big step forward by starting to breed Ranger Gold.
– We are switching to slow-growing Ranger Gold chickens that have very good ratings both in terms of animal welfare and food quality, says Per-Olof Ingemarsson, CEO of Bjärefågel in Torekow AB.

The change in chicken farming is the continuation of the journey that Bjärefågel began in the turn of the year 2014-2015, when they became the first in Sweden to breed the slowly growing Rowan Ranger chicken. Now they are taking things to the next level.
– The Bjärekyckling concept has always focused on animal welfare and sustainability. If we see that it is possible to make changes towards something better, we will do so.

Higher requirements

The choice of the Ranger Gold strain was no coincidence. The bird is a combination of a brown-feathered Ranger female that produces excellent reproduction and a Gold male that delivers outstanding performance for robustness and bone and hoof health. The chick is also approved by several animal welfare organizations such as the Better Life label in the Netherlands, the Tierschutzlabel “Für Mehr Tierschutz” in Germany and the RSPCA Assured in the United Kingdom.
The first Ranger Gold chickens have already been placed in one of Bjärefågels breeding stables. In the month of March-April, the new upgraded Bjärefågels chicken will start being sold in stores around Sweden, and will also be served on the menus of the many restaurants and salad chains that have chosen Bjärefågels chicken.
– We set high standards for ourselves, both in terms of sustainability and animal welfare, and our customers do the same, says Per-Olof Ingemarsson.

Developing the concept

The new Ranger Gold chickens fit well into the Bjärefågels concept. Bjärefågels chickens have twice as much space per bird in the barn compared to what is allowed. It is also Sweden’s only climate-certified chicken.
– Our Bjärekycklingar chickens eat an GMO-free vegetable feed based on locally grown corn. All breeding takes place on or near the Bjäre Peninsula to reduce transportation. When we lift our birds, we wrap each individual chicken with two hands around its body and wings to minimize damage and stress, says Per-Olof Ingemarsson.
